TECHNOLOGY
INTENT
​At Glenbrook, we aim to provide all children with a broad and balanced curriculum which prepares them for life beyond primary education. Design Technology is a subject that develops children’s problem-solving abilities; we encourage children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. We aim to, where possible, link projects to other subjects such as mathematics, science, computing and art, inspiring our children to become innovators and risk takers.

IMPLEMENTATION
Pupils will be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to be able to design and make products and prototypes through a range of creative and practical activities. The activities will be linked to real-life contexts including the home, children's hobbies and enterprise to give meaning to learning. Our teaching of design technology follows the design, make and evaluate cycle and ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year. Throughout Key Stages 1 and 2, children build up their knowledge and understanding of the iterative design process and are taught to work safely and hygienically. DT is taught on a half termly basis. In EYFS through construction and daily access to modelling materials as part of continuous provision, children develop the foundational skills to build on in Year 1.

IMPACT
By the time children leave Glenbrook they have developed an excellent attitude to learning and working both independently and as a part of a team. The children will have the ability to carry out research, show initiative and ask questions to develop an understanding of the user’s needs. They will build up a knowledge of how to work with different materials and understand the processes involved in making. During their time at Glenbrook children will develop the skills needed to become independent critical thinkers, evaluating their designs.
