RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AT GLENBROOK

Religious Education has a significant role for the development of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. It promotes respect and open-mindedness towards others with different faiths and beliefs and encourages pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging through self-awareness and reflection.

The implementation of the RE curriculum in primary schools aims to develop students' understanding and respect for diverse religions and world views, foster critical thinking and support their spiritual and moral growth. By promoting a sense of community and belonging, the RE curriculum contributes to the overall development and wellbeing of students. The key aims for Religious Education are reflected in two attainment targets: learning about religion and belief and learning from religion and belief. The development of knowledge, skills and understanding focuses on these two key aspects of learning in Religious Education.

Children will learn about the six main faiths: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism and Buddhism. Children’s knowledge and understanding will be developed through handling artefacts, exploring sacred texts, using imaginative play or drama to express feelings and ideas, meeting visitors from local religious communities, making visits to religious places of worship where possible, and where not, making use of videos and the internet.

Children will recognise similarities and differences within and between religions, recognise how religious practice is conducted in a variety of ways, discuss their own and other’s views of religious truth and belief, reflect on morality and how people respond to decisions they are faced with, reflect on sources of information and what they find value in, in their own and other’s lives and extend their knowledge and understanding of religions and beliefs. In nursery and reception, to meet the Early Learning Goal ((ELG): People, Culture and Communities Children at the expected level of development: children will know some similarities and differences between different religions and cultural communities in this country, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.
